Some bridges need to be burned to wash away the past and build anew. This song was written when George Floyd lost his life. I desired to do something and all I could really think of in the moment was to be supportive without making it about me. I was looking for a way to transmute the pain I saw and felt around the world, so I turned inward with music. I’ve never been to Mississippi but as many guitarists do, I grew up mesmerized by the legend of Robert Johnson and the blues music I imagined being born from the oppressive roots of slavery. The other story about Mississippi I’ve always been fascinated by is the drowning of Jeff Buckley on the brink of stardom. From the seeds of these stories I envisioned a magical young girl (half black, half white) born from the life force of the river, destined to heal the pain of the racial prejudice seeping from the Earth. She dances through the night in a tiny town waking everyone up and ultimately bringing them to a bridge where atrocities had occurred. She uses her magic to cleanse the land and ready it for renewal.
lyrics
Children of the Night
Way down in Mississippi
A child of the night was born
Dark as night and pale as moon
Rising from the rivers edge
Naive and swift, catch the beat, can’t miss
One step, then the next
One step, then the next
Through the shadows she walks
Creating life as she sings
About the cropholder’s curse of the truth laid bare
She kneels down to feel the earth blood as it heals
A memory revealed, A vision revealed
Let your mind believe in the love it cannot see
There is life in a dream, there is life in this dream
Beyond the fork and North of town
Where two children never drowned
Heart beats echo in the dark
Of the life they never found
The child walks on the bridge
One spark and it’s lit
A new sun begins, A new sun begins
Let your mind believe in the love it cannot see
There is life in a dream, there is life in this dream
The trees know the past, remember where we’re at
One step then the next, catch the beat can’t miss
One step then the next, catch the beat can’t miss
Let your mind believe in the love it cannot see
There is life in a dream, there is life in this dream
